We’re Mad, Mad Hot

We knew that Joe was a handsome looking gentlemen, but what we didn’t know was that in the latest issue of Avenue Magazine he was going to make Don Draper look like a scrub. That’s right Don Draper now looks scrubby. Or maybe we’ve just lost respect for Don after he bedded that truck-stop waitress with the big chin. Anyway we digress. Joe Hospodarec, our Creative Director, along with a choice handful of Calgary’s CDs were asked to pose Mad Men style. Other lucky ad folks featured include Zahra Al-harazi of Foundry, Keli Pollock of Pollock, Mike Meadus of McLaren McCann, Phil Copithorne of Karo and Todd Blevins of Trigger. We think the results are debonair. (Which is just a fancy way of saying fancy.)

Hot Dog Swap

Last Wednesday our production group decided it would be super fun to deny their fellow employees the freedom to eat whatever they want. Lists of hot dog condiments were placed in a hat and everyone chose their gastronomical fate. A real modern gentlemen, Brian Allen the art director, decided to sacrifice himself and make a tradesies for the hot dog with peanut butter and bananas, thereby proving that chivalry still exists.

Oh yeah, we also made the short film about flying dogs. It’s better than the junk that won the Academy Awards this year.

Oh wowsers, do we ever feel intelligent today. A bunch of our design work is featured in one of them high-falutin’ learny books for young, smart folks. Graphic Design Solutions is the name of the textbook and it’s written by Robin Landa, a professor in the Robert Busch School of Design at Kean University of New Jersey.

We’re very pleased to inspire designers of the future. What will future designers be like? Will they have Adobe Creative Suite 54 already downloaded into computers in their heads? Of course they will, you dummy.

WAX Turns 5!

We’re five years old today, and feel that we are quite developed for a five-year-old. Most of us know how to feed ourselves, dress ourselves and even read the newspaper.

So, what’s the secret to our success? We can’t tell you, it’s our secret – and it’s written on a tiny scroll that’s hidden inside a sacred panda’s mouth. The only way to get at the scroll is to buy the best outfit in the whole world (only the best), wear it and show it to the panda. The right colour combination will unlock his mouth. He will say, “Oooooooooh myyyyyyy god, where did you get that?” and the scroll will fall out.

If you don’t feel like doing this, we can give you a hint: the secret to our success has something to do with hard work, creativity and the recognition that comes soon after that.

“WAX Cleans Up At Anvil Awards”, says Marketing Magazine

“Last week’s Ad Rodeo Anvil Awards were all about WAX work, as the Calgary agency took home a show-leading eight Anvil trophies and a Best in Show for its work with Eating Disorder Education Organization.

The Anvils celebrate the Calgary creative advertising and design community.

WAX’s “Ice Cream” execution, which shows a woman eating the dessert in reverse, won over judges to earn top honours.

The shop also won first-place Anvils for work with clients Victoria Symphony, Fas Gas, Mitchell Eye Centre and Calgary Farmer’s Market, among others. It rounded out the night with eight merit awards as well.

“What’s nice about this year’s awards are how they showcased the range of talent we attract to the agency,” said WAX president, Dan Wright, in a statement. “I’m proud to say that we had wins in design, advertising, broadcast and digital online.”

This is the second consecutive year WAX has won Best in Show after it won for its quirky ads for the Calgary International Film Festival in 2009. Karo, which has offices in Vancouver and Calgary, took home five Anvils and four merits this year, while Taxi rounded out the podium finishers with four Anvils and nine merits.

Overall, 20 agencies took home awards, up from last year’s record-breaking 12.”

AdRodeo 2010 WAX Anvils

WAX brought down the house this year at the 2010 Anvil Awards, taking home eight Anvils including Best of Show, as well as another eight merits. We won’t lie, it felt pretty good to win all those awards. The next day’s pounding headache however, did not feel quite as nice.

We aren’t really known for our individual musical talents over here at WAX, but when we combine forces, watch out. The other day we started an agency wide band without the use of any instruments. Some of us stomped our feet, some clapped, a few snapped, one or two made really annoying throat noises. We put them altogether in a magical music stew and came up with something pretty cool.
