Happy Birthday WAX

WAX Turns 5!

We’re five years old today, and feel that we are quite developed for a five-year-old. Most of us know how to feed ourselves, dress ourselves and even read the newspaper.

So, what’s the secret to our success? We can’t tell you, it’s our secret – and it’s written on a tiny scroll that’s hidden inside a sacred panda’s mouth. The only way to get at the scroll is to buy the best outfit in the whole world (only the best), wear it and show it to the panda. The right colour combination will unlock his mouth. He will say, “Oooooooooh myyyyyyy god, where did you get that?” and the scroll will fall out.

If you don’t feel like doing this, we can give you a hint: the secret to our success has something to do with hard work, creativity and the recognition that comes soon after that.

“WAX Cleans Up At Anvil Awards”, says Marketing Magazine

April 26th, 2010

Excerpt from Marketing Magazine Online:

“Last week’s Ad Rodeo Anvil Awards were all about WAX work, as the Calgary agency took home a show-leading eight Anvil trophies and a Best in Show for its work with Eating Disorder Education Organization.

The Anvils celebrate the Calgary creative advertising and design community.

WAX’s “Ice Cream” execution, which shows a woman eating the dessert in reverse, won over judges to earn top honours.

The shop also won first-place Anvils for work with clients Victoria Symphony, Fas Gas, Mitchell Eye Centre and Calgary Farmer’s Market, among others. It rounded out the night with eight merit awards as well.

“What’s nice about this year’s awards are how they showcased the range of talent we attract to the agency,” said WAX president, Dan Wright, in a statement. “I’m proud to say that we had wins in design, advertising, broadcast and digital online.”

This is the second consecutive year WAX has won Best in Show after it won for its quirky ads for the Calgary International Film Festival in 2009. Karo, which has offices in Vancouver and Calgary, took home five Anvils and four merits this year, while Taxi rounded out the podium finishers with four Anvils and nine merits.

Overall, 20 agencies took home awards, up from last year’s record-breaking 12.”

AdRodeo 2010 WAX Anvils

WAX brought down the house this year at the 2010 Anvil Awards, taking home eight Anvils including Best of Show, as well as another eight merits. We won’t lie, it felt pretty good to win all those awards. The next day’s pounding headache however, did not feel quite as nice.

Aren’t They Adorable?

March 2nd, 2010

Since spring is known as the season of new beginnings, we decided to incorporate some baby vegetables into the Calgary Farmers’ Market spring campaign. Yes, we know they’re cute, but please keep your voices down; they need their sleep.

Forget Golden Pencil, we want a Grammy.

January 15th, 2010

We aren’t really known for our individual musical talents over here at WAX, but when we combine forces, watch out. The other day we started an agency wide band without the use of any instruments. Some of us stomped our feet, some clapped, a few snapped, one or two made really annoying throat noises. We put them altogether in a magical music stew and came up with something pretty cool. Tour dates to be posted soon.

We’re going to widen the doorways and raise the ceilings to make room for our giant heads. The results are back from the Advertising and Design Club of Canada and we won silver for the Canadian Society of Persons with Disabilities 2008 annual report, along with three merit certificates: one for CSPD, one for SAIT “Girls” radio, and one for the Victoria Symphony. Now we’re going to put tiny swimsuits on our pale bodies and stand next to life size cutouts of tanned supermodels. Nothing puts an ego in check like good old-fashioned shame.

Our Designer’s Voice Went Into a Bunch of Ears in Toronto.

November 11th, 2009

design-thinkers.jpg

Isn’t it so nice to get invited somewhere? Out of the 6,790,062,216 people in the world, they chose you … YOU … how flattering. Well, this phenomenon just happened to our lovely design director, Monique Gamache, when she was invited to speak at DesignThinkers ‘09, Canada’s largest creative conference held in Toronto.

On November 3, she warmed up the audience with some partial nudity, a panda, two women making out, and other unexpected scenes that Monique doesn’t appear in. It was WAX’s self-promotion video and the audience showed their appreciation by making loud sounds with their vocal cords … um … yeah … laughter is what it is called.

After that, Monique talked about finding “The Quirk Behind the Brand” and showed some recent work. Basically, she believes that every brand has an amazing, unique story to tell, through ads, design and whatnot. She believes that creative thinking can make anything super interesting: paper clips, rocks, maybe even dust.

She also bought some new shoes while she was there.

WAX Feeds the Calgary Drop-in Centre

We helped hundreds of very grateful people going through some tough times, and we also did some jobs that ad agencies don’t normally do.

Some of us put on plastic gloves, reached into giant tubs of butter and spread our delicious findings on buns. Some of us wore unflattering hair nets. And we all got to either dish the food onto plates or run it to the tables. One of the regular volunteers could carry six plates at a time, which made us look pretty amateur, but our hearts were in the right place so that made up for our lack of serving skills.

Word got around that it was a delicious meal and after it was over we all received a very genuine applause (not the phony kind that you hear everywhere else). It sure does feel nice to be nice.
